Eating For Two

EATING FOR TWO

Just how much eating for two should I do? Everyone seems to have a different answer, gaining different amounts of weight during their pregnancies.

I had a doctor appointment the other day and had to be weighed. The first number the scale came up with took my breath away. Now I know I will and need to gain weight, but seeing the numbers was still surprising! My husband laughed as I then took off my watch, jacket and shoes and got back on the scale. I wondered if men had ever even thought of this! The result - five pounds less - he wasn't laughing then.

My doctor listened to the heartbeat, took my blood pressure and did discuss weight gain. It's been reasonable so far. He advised me to be responsible because huge a weight gain can add complications, which I really need to avoid. I am able to eat more well-rounded meals now that I no longer feel sick so I am working on it, but when I'm hungry I will not hesitate to eat, especially since I need extra calories.

Hi Lisa!
I have two little boys.. and both times the doctors said not to gain more than 30 lbs.. It sounds like alot but don't forget most of it is the fluid they are carried in.
I hope all is going well!

Lisa,
I hate to burst your bubble, but if you eat like you're eating for two, you're going to get as big as a house, lol! Just eat healthy, well-rounded meals, get plenty of calcium and niacin, take your vitamins and exercise. Walking is best, but there are other exercises that are fine for pregnant women. If you gain too much weight, not only does it cause complications, but it's so much harder to lose after the baby. Really, a baby only weighs 6 - 9 lbs or so. Obviously, you need to gain more than that, but 50-60 lbs is certainly not necessary. Listen to your doctor. Mine tried to keep me at about 25 lbs. It was hard, but I was thankful afterward.

Lisa,
Congrats on your news! I too know what it's like to struggle to get pregnant. Best of luck to you! I was never given a clear answer from my doctor as to how much weight to or not to gain. He just said not to eat like I was eating for 3 (we had twins) but instead suggested eating 5-6 small meals/snacks daily and to drink plenty of fluids.

Congratulations!! I was 34 when I was pregnant with my daughter. What an amazing experience. I really watched what I ate. No fast food (full of empty calories and I didn't miss it one bit). Ate lots of fruit, grapes and cantaloupe were my favorites. Also, drink tons of water. In the end, I only gained 25 pounds. If you can, breastfeed. After 5 weeks of having my daughter, I had lost all my baby weight. Breastfeeding does help with the weightloss.
Best wishes for a wonderful pregnancy to you and your husband.
